John and I had the chance to do the most fun and fulfilling project recently: designing new bedrooms for three amazing local kids who are currently going through cancer treatment. We’ve shared a few sneak peeks on Instagram and our podcast, but here’s our big photo-packed post with details on each of the rooms as promised for you guys! We couldn’t be more excited to share them with you.

First, some background on the project. A few weeks ago the team at Biringer Builders reached out to us for help. They’re the custom builder we teamed up with back in 2014 to design a charity showhouse for Richmond Homearama (below are some photos of that project). Homerama is an annual event where people can tour several show homes for design ideas and this year’s charity partner is ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation. They’re an awesome organization that provides support to kids and families battling cancer, so Biringer and ASK decided that rather than just decorate the bedrooms in their showhouse for fictional placeholder children, why not design the rooms for real kids going through treatment.

Here we are, folks. After over a year of planning, second guessing ourselves, more planning, sweating, and filling our car with vases and egg chairs, we’ve reached the end of the Homearama Showhouse tour.

So in celebration of completing this whole-house marathon of sorts, we’re kicking off this post with a whole-house video tour. Nothing too high tech. Just me stumbling through the house:

Photo-wise, there are few rooms on each floor that we still haven’t shared/sourced for you. So let’s slide through the dining room, powder room, mudroom, guest room, guest bathroom, and the laundry room.

We love dark wall colors in a dining space, so for this room we chose Kendall Charcoal, which we balanced out with white trim and linear wainscoting that we had John the Carpenter build (you can read more on that – and what inspired it – here).

Playing (Show)House… And A Video! https://www.younghouselove.com/playing-showhouse-and-a-video/ https://www.younghouselove.com/playing-showhouse-and-a-video/#comments Tue, 20 May 2014 13:55:48 +0000 http://www.younghouselove.com/?p=64635 Playing (Show)House… And A Video!

Before the Homearama show concluded this weekend, we slipped through on Friday with Teddy strapped into our baby carrier (Clara was with the grandparents) so we could check out the homes with visitors in them. It was fun to chat with show-goers, see our pantry getting filled up with food donations, and we even spotted a note someone left us on a notepad in the girl’s room of our house. But perhaps the most exciting thing we got to see in person was the People’s Choice Award that our house won! The votes were very close, and all of the other homes were so well done. It’s hard to put into words how much we’ve learned from this year-long experience. It has been such an honor to be involved.

Even though the show is over, we’ve still got more of our virtual tour to complete. Today we’re tackling the most playful spaces in the home: the kids’ bedrooms, their shared bathroom, and the playroom/reading room.

Let’s Take It Outside https://www.younghouselove.com/lets-take-it-outside/ https://www.younghouselove.com/lets-take-it-outside/#comments Tue, 13 May 2014 14:06:29 +0000 http://www.younghouselove.com/?p=64557 Let’s Take It Outside

There are a few outdoor showhouse spaces that we haven’t shown at all in this entire yearlong process. Each of the seven showhouses were encouraged to include some fun outdoor spaces as well as indoor ones, so aside from the stuff you can see from the curb, there’s also a back porch and a back patio complete with a stone fireplace. The cool thing about these outdoor spaces is that they’re the places that we got to put our heads together with the builder and the architect the most – and they ended up being some of our favorites.

The craziest thing is that our house won 1st place (i.e. the “Gold Award”) for both Curb Appeal and Outdoor Living. With this being our first time doing a showhouse, we honestly weren’t sure we’d win anything at all, so getting those two along with the silver for Creative Home surprised and thrilled us to say the least.

House Crashing: The Whole Show https://www.younghouselove.com/house-crashing-the-whole-show/ https://www.younghouselove.com/house-crashing-the-whole-show/#comments Thu, 08 May 2014 14:20:35 +0000 http://www.younghouselove.com/?p=64538 House Crashing: The Whole Show

For the last few weeks you guys have been requesting a House Crashing post with photos of the other six Homearama homes in the show, so we slipped through and snapped a bunch of pictures of each house, just like we did for this Homearama House Crash from 2012 (that’s your warning that this post is extremely image-heavy). Everyone who has attended the show so far seems to have different favorites, which is definitely part of the fun (there’s a “people’s choice” award that everyone who passes through can vote for, and each of the seven boxes have a ton of papers in them).

All of the houses in the show sit on a cul-de-sac and are numbered, so we’ll do the most logical thing and start with House #1, which was built and designed by LeGault Homes.

Perhaps the most luxuriously decorated home of the show, it has some of the coolest cabinetry we’ve seen in a while.

The Heart of The (Show) Home https://www.younghouselove.com/the-heart-of-the-show-home/ https://www.younghouselove.com/the-heart-of-the-show-home/#comments Thu, 01 May 2014 13:55:18 +0000 http://www.younghouselove.com/?p=64479 The Heart of The (Show) Home

Happy May and, well, Happy Opening Day of Homearama! Yep, our showhouse is officially open to the public as of today, along with the six others in the show. Deepbreathsdeepbreaths.

Since we last showed you the office, butler’s pantry, and main bedroom (along with the en-suite bathroom & closet) and then took a pause to have a baby, let’s pick back up in the main living spaces of the house: the living room & the kitchen – which you can see from the floor plan below are both pretty big zones on the first floor.

The walls in both the living room and the kitchen are Simply White, and then we layered in some colorful paint/textiles/art/accessories (like a navy fireplace column, a kitchen island in the same color, a breakfast nook full of colorful accessories, some bold art in both spaces, and a colorful rug and pillows, etc).

It’s Bath Time https://www.younghouselove.com/its-bath-time/ https://www.younghouselove.com/its-bath-time/#comments Thu, 10 Apr 2014 13:12:28 +0000 http://www.younghouselove.com/?p=64265 It’s Bath Time

Continuing our showhouse-heavy week of reveals, we’re bringing you a bunch of after photos from three more spaces – the main bedroom’s en-suite bathroom, its attached closet, and cool little atrium space. We showed you the main bedroom on Tuesday (along with the office and the butler’s pantry) so it only felt natural to continue our virtual tour where we left off.

The attached bath and closet sit off a corner of the main bedroom and are separated by a space that we’ve been lovingly calling the “atrium” (it’s really more of a vestibule) which you can see above on the right side.

Here’s the floor plan for a clearer map of how that area is situated:

The atrium features a brass floor mirror donated by West Elm, a driftwood light from Shades of Light, and walls that are painted Stonington Gray by Benjamin Moore just like the bedroom.

Business, Bedding, & Butlering https://www.younghouselove.com/business-beddins-butlering/ https://www.younghouselove.com/business-beddins-butlering/#comments Tue, 08 Apr 2014 13:22:31 +0000 http://www.younghouselove.com/?p=64234 Business, Bedding, & Butlering

As of 5:30pm yesterday, our second big Homearama Showhouse deadline was hit. Phew. The builder was throwing a preview party at the house so everything had to be done, cleaned, and ready to be shown off to a whole slew of people (realtors, prospective buyers, generous local companies who donated furnishings/accessories to this cause, etc). Heck, the weather even cooperated in the final seconds and gave us this nice photo op.

It was kinda weird yet exciting to have the place alive with people, music, and food. They brought in caterers to show off the kitchen/appliances, and Sherry and I pretty much gorged since we had been running around in hyper-drive all day. There were literally picture frames and window treatments being hung in the last few minutes, so it was one of those down-to-the-wire moments.

We were also able to begin snapping some “after” photos in a couple of the rooms (we figured they’d never look cleaner).
